In Jeremiah, chapter one, verse nineteen, “And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.” Jeremiah was told that Judah’s kings, officials, priests, and even the people would stand against him and the message he had been called to proclaim, as in verse eighteen. “For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.” However, the prophet was encouraged to speak out boldly and stand firm in his convictions, for God promised to be with Him; God assured Him that his enemies would not overcome him. Metaphorically, the walls and fortifications of the city represent the prophet’s power in patiently enduring the attacks of his enemies; while the iron pillar, supporting the whole weight of the roof, signifies that no trials or sufferings would crush his steadfast will.
God always stands with His faithful servants who declare the truth to those who have departed from His Word and are conformed to the world. That thought was in itself enough. The presence, and therefore the protection, of the All-wise and the Almighty was the one condition of safety. Even in its lower sense, “Immanuel,” God with us, as in Isaiah seven, verse fourteen, was the watchword of every true combatant in God’s great army.
Believers must realize from the theme perspective that Satan will make united attempts to overthrow our trust and will in God as we continue to serve Him. However, the devil will cunningly try all his devices along with his demons to devour God’s people. Still, God will be their guard.
