In Isaiah, chapter sixty-one, verses one through three, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”
This description of the Messiah and His anointing relates to the Messiah’s mission or ministry. When Jesus began His ministry, He quoted these verses and applied them to Himself, as in Luke four, verses eighteen to nineteen. To fulfill His ministry, Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit. His anointed ministry involved preaching the gospel to the poor, the meek, and the afflicted; healing and binding up the spiritually and physically sick and broken-hearted; breaking the bonds of evil and proclaiming freedom from sin and satanic dominion, and opening the spiritual eyes of the lost that they might see the light of the gospel and be saved. This fourfold purpose characterized the entire ministry of Jesus, and it will continue to be fulfilled by the church as long as it is on the earth.
There is a hint in verse one of the Old Testament passage of the doctrine of the Trinity: the “Lord God,” the “Spirit,” and “Jesus.” This scripture proves the Son of God existed in the Spirit before He came to earth in the flesh to redeem humanity. He needed to come through a body to pay for the sin committed in the Garden of Eden so that people who receive salvation can have eternal life spiritually when their time is over on earth, enabling them to make heaven their final destination.
