In Isaiah, chapter fifty-two, verse thirteen through fifty-three, verse twelve is the section concerning the suffering and rejection of the Servant-Messiah, Jesus Christ. Isaiah prophesies that through His suffering, many would be forgiven, justified, redeemed, and healed. His suffering would also lead to His exaltation and glory. The New Testament quotes from this portion of scripture more than any other Old Testament section.
Isaiah fifty-three, verse one, “Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?” This scripture is quoted in John twelve, verse thirty-seven to thirty-eight, and Romans ten, verse sixteen. In verse four, “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” This is also stated in Matthew eight, verses sixteen and seventeen.
Isaiah fifty-three, verses seven through eight are quoted in Acts eight, verse thirty-two to thirty-three, verse nine, are quoted in First Peter two, verse twenty-two. Isaiah fifty-three, verse twelve is quoted in Mark fifteen, verses twenty-seven through twenty-eight, and Luke twenty-two, verse thirty-seven, respectively.
Other quotations continue from Isaiah fifty-three, verse four, found in Hebrews nine, verse twenty-eight. In verses four, five, and six of Isaiah fifty-three are alluded to in First Peter two, verses twenty-four to twenty-five. In verse seven of the same chapter is alluded to in Matthew twenty-six, verses sixty-two, sixty-three, Matthew twenty-seven, verses twelve to fourteen, Mark fourteen, verses sixty to sixty-one, Mark fifteen, verse five, Luke twenty-three, verse nine, and John nineteen, verse nine, respectively.
Isaiah fifty-three, verse nine is alluded to in Matthew twenty-seven, verses fifty-seven to sixty, and Luke twenty-three, verse thirty-three. Isaiah fifty-three, verse twelve is alluded to in Matthew twenty-seven, verse thirty-eight.
All these verses in Isaiah fifty-three indicate the impact this chapter has on the New Testament.
