In Jeremiah, chapter ten, verses two through sixteen, due to the threat of the Babylonian invasion, the people turned themselves over severely to idols and to the astrology and spiritism of the surrounding nations. Jeremiah warns the people against such action, declaring that the Lord God is the one true God who created all things, as in verses ten to twelve of the theme. “But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.”
The prophet shows the glory of Israel’s God, and exposes the folly of idolaters. Charms and other attempts to obtain supernatural help, or to pry into futurity, are copied from the wicked customs of the heathen. Let us stand in awe, and not dare provoke God, by giving that glory to another which is due to Him alone. He is ready to forgive and save all who repent and believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ. Faith learns these blessed truths from the word of God, but all knowledge not from that source leads to doctrines of vanity.
Leave this to heathens; that doth not become God’s people, who do wholly depend upon him; for indeed the heathen, as many ignorant Christians do to this day, were more afraid of the signs of heaven and astrological predictions than of God. This happens to those who do not make time for God but for these ungodly things.
