Recompense their iniquity

In Jeremiah, chapter sixteen, verse eighteen, “And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things.” “Double” can also mean “equivalent.” God would pay the people back in full for their sin and wickedness.
A restitution, or fine, to double the amount of the wrong done, was almost the normal standard of punishment under the Law of Moses, as in Exodus twenty-two, verses four and seven. Sin is twofold; there is the leaving of God’s will undone, and the actual wrongdoing. And every punishment is twofold: first, there is the loss of blessing which would have followed upon obedience, and second, the presence of actual misery.
Recompense is to either give compensation or something to make up for loss or damage. Revelation twenty-two, verse twelve, declares, “And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according to his work shall be.” God will come to judge all believers as to the degree of their faithfulness and grace given to them during this life on earth. The Lord will also evaluate the quality of life, influence, teaching, and work of believers.
Can anyone who serves God make up for the sins they have committed? No, not one. All a believer can do is admit their sins and humbly ask for forgiveness, and continue on the path of righteousness. However, the careless believer could lose out on heavenly rewards at the Lord’s coming. Therefore, the necessity of complete dedication, including faithful self-sacrificing service to our Lord is vital for those who claim to serve Him. Still, if the work is judged unworthy, a believer can lose their reward. Yet, they themself may still be saved.
