In Jeremiah, chapter twenty-seven, verse six, “And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.” Nebuchadnezzar is called God’s servant, not because God would use him and his army to punish many nations, including God’s nations of Judah, for their sins; however, God would also overthrow Babylon is His own set time, as in verse seven.
Jeremiah is to prepare a sign that all the neighbouring countries would be made subject to the king of Babylon. God asserts His right to dispose of kingdoms as he pleases. Whatever any have of the good things of this world, it is what God sees fit to give; we should therefore be content. The things of this world are not the best things, for the Lord often gives the largest share to bad men. Dominion is not founded in grace.
There are situations where God will use someone who may not be committed to godly ways to bring forth His purpose to those who are supposed to depend on Him. Why else would He do it? If the Lord is not getting His chosen’s attention, then using these non-believers is an alternative to gain the people of God’s attention. “For whom the Lord loveth, He chasteneth,” is the beginning of Hebrews twelve, verse six. However, in verse eleven, Hebrews declares, “Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yielded peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”
God will chase those He loves because something else may have taken over the heart and mind of that person who had God first. The Lord must be the center of our lives.
