In Isaiah, chapter fifty-three, verse five, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Christ was crucified because we have sinned and are guilty before God, as in Psalm twenty-two, verse sixteen, Zechariah twelve, verse ten, and John nineteen, verse thirty-four, respectively. As our substitute, He took the punishment due us and paid the penalty for our sins: the penalty of death, as in Romans six, verse twenty-three. Therefore, we can be forgiven and have peace with God, as in Romans five, verse one.
“With his stripes we are healed” refers to the healing of salvation and all its benefits, spiritual and physical. Sickness and disease are the result of the fall and Satan’s activity in the world. “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil,” as in First John three, verse eight. Christ gave gifts of healing to His church, as in First Corinthians twelve, verse nine, and commanded His followers to heal the sick as part of their proclamation of the kingdom of God, as in Luke nine, verses one to two, and six, Luke ten, verses one, eight to nine, and verse nineteen, accordingly.
There is a song from this theme verse that is similar, but it changes slightly near the end.
But He was wounded for my transgressions
He was bruised for our iniquities
Surely He bore our sorrows
And by His stripes we are healed
This song should be a reminder to all believers of what the Son of God, Jesus Christ, did for us to be free from sin.
