In Psalms, chapter nine, verse eighteen, the needy and the afflicted among God’s people are objects of His special care, as in verses nine, ten, and twelve. They have the promise that God will not forsake them, as in verse ten, and that He will remember their prayers, as in verse twelve, and that their hopes will eventually be realized, as in verse eighteen.
The needy is the condition of want, deplorable, and lack of necessities. Today, the disadvantaged are people desiring to have good things but can only afford the basics. However, some needy people are unable to keep up with their responsibilities. Other people in need are the ones who are financially overboard and use more finances than they earn. Another set of people are the ones that can’t even afford the necessities and live off of assistance and free funding from drop-in centers.
Poor and needy are found together in the Old Testament seventeen times and nineteen in the same sentence. A few examples in Psalms seventy-two, verse thirteen, “He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.” “Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked,” from Psalms eighty-two, verse four. Psalms thirty-five, verse ten, “All my bones shall say, LORD, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?”
The poor and needy often experience neglect or are looked down on. Although for a time, God may seem to forget or neglect them and suffer their enemies to triumph over them. However, for believers who are poor and needy, God has provided a throne of grace for them to come to for help in time of need, and he will supply all their wants out of the fullness of grace in Christ.
