In Psalms, chapter one hundred and twelve, verse three, the well-being of God’s faithful people begins with the third book of John, verse two, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” The provision and intention of God for believers are to be healthy and their lives accompanied by His blessings. He wants all to go well with us: our work, plans, purposes, ministry, and families follow God’s will and direction. Therefore, God’s blessings through redemption in Christ intend to meet physical and spiritual needs.
Concerning prosperity, both physical and spiritual, Scripture teaches that the word “prosper” means “to have a good journey, to be led along a good road.” Although we should trust God to supply our needs materially, believers should recognize the Bible’s teaching that we may sometimes experience and need to be encouraged to trust Him more and develop our faith, spiritual endurance, and ministry. Believers may undergo severe distress because of persecution and oppression from evildoers in the world today. Believers may experience poverty due to national or natural circumstances such as war, famine, drought, and economic or social conditions.
God’s presence, help, and blessing in our physical lives are related to the prosperity of our spiritual lives. Believers must seek God’s will, obey the Holy Spirit, remain separated from the spirit of this evil age, love God’s Word, seek His help in prayer, work hard, trust Him to supply our needs and live by the principle of seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Although our souls may be getting along well, this will not automatically exempt us from difficulties in other areas of our lives that we must face by prayer and trust in God. Wealth and riches are in Him.
