Thou mayest walk in the way of good

In Proverbs, chapter two, verse twenty, the blessings of gaining wisdom include learning to fear the Lord and thereby being guarded against evil along life’s path, as in verses five through eight; having the ability to discern good from evil and thereby avoiding the tragedies of sin in verse eleven; desiring to refrain from evil people and associating with those who are good and righteous, as in verses twelve to fifteen, and verse twenty; abstaining from sexual immorality, as in verses sixteen through nineteen, and gaining the promised blessing of God, in verse twenty-one.

The theme verse, “That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous,” is under the Reward of Wisdom section. The benefits of those obedient to God’s Word will help young guys and girls to keep away, as in verse twelve of Proverbs two, “To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things.” To persuade by saying different things from what God’s Word declares. In verse sixteen, especially for the young men, warning them, “To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words.”

To walk in the way of good begins in the Eye-gate and the Ear-gate. These senses are the entrance to the heart. This is where the Son of God dwells within the believer. However, if there is something else we allow and approve that which is ungodly to enter inside of us, how do we expect the Lord to dwell there? David allowed himself to stare and watch Bathsheba bathing from the roof of his house. And look at what led him to commit, which changed his life and family.

All of God’s people must guard against what we let in.
