Thou covered me in my mother’s womb

In Psalms, chapter hundred and thirty-nine, verse thirteen, God is creatively and actively involved in the development of human life. He also cares for the baby from the moment of conception; His regard for a fetus extends to a plan for their life. For this reason, God considers the abortion of an unborn infant as murder of human life. God brings us into life for a purpose.

In Exodus twenty-one, verses twenty-two, “If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.” In addition to protecting living persons, God requires the protection of unborn children. This verse twenty-two here in the Old Testament refers to a woman giving birth prematurely because of violence done to her; the one causing the premature birth had to pay a fine.

If there was a serious injury to the mother or the child, the offending party had to pay according to the Law of retaliation. Note that if death results for the mother or the child, then the perpetrator was found guilty of murder and had to pay with their life in the Old Testament. In other words, the unborn child is viewed here as a human being; the fetus’s death is considered murder.

Note that this is the only instance in the Law where accidental manslaughter called for the death penalty, as in Deuteronomy nineteen, verses four through ten. The principle is clear: God seeks to protect those who are least able to defend themselves. An unborn child is not involved in the decision-making of their own life. All they do is wait for the result of a mother’s decision.
