In Proverbs, chapter fourteen, verse thirty-two, although the Old Testament contains no fully developed doctrine of what happens after death, Proverbs does reveal that the righteous have the hope of life after death. When the wicked die, they have no hope, only dread of final ruin. When the righteous die, they commit themselves to God as their refuge and hope beyond death, as in Proverbs twelve, verse twenty-eight, Psalms forty-nine, verses fourteen to fifteen, and Psalms seventy-three, verse twenty-four, respectively. Further telling concerning the eternal destiny of the righteous and the wicked is in the New Testament teachings of Christ and the apostles.
The wise and foolish builders in Matthew seven, verses twenty-four through twenty-seven. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
The wise and foolish builders in Luke six, verses forty-six through forty-nine, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”
The righteous have hope when they do as the wise builders. However, the foolish builders are like the wicked ones. “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.”
