In Proverbs, chapter eighteen, verse twelve, “Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.” Pride is a spirit of self-importance that includes trusting in ourselves. Boasting and arrogance are sins associated with pride, and they will bring us to destruction, as in chapter fifteen, verse thirty-three. “The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.” The other scripture is Proverbs sixteen, verse eighteen, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Haughty means arrogant, which is a person who thinks, behaves, and acts disrespectfully around others. A few examples of arrogance may include a person refusing to admit when they’re wrong. Another may be the habit of interrupting others when they are talking or speaking over someone in a meeting—the idea of having the assumption of being the smartest person within a group setting.
Dismissing other people’s ideas without any consideration. The refusal to ask for directions when lost. Taking credit for someone else’s work. The way of looking down on others because of their job or income. The habit of not accepting feedback or criticism.
More arrogant examples may include bragging about personal achievements, ignoring advice because you believe you know better, not waiting your turn in line, mocking someone for not knowing something you do, and not apologizing because you assume you’re always right. Treating staff disrespectfully, showing off expensive possessions to make others envious, and thinking rules do not apply to you. Name-dropping to gain status, not listening in a conversation, and only waiting for your turn to speak.
First Samuel two, verse three, says, “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
