In Isaiah, chapter three, verses sixteen through twenty-six, from the beginning, “Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:” In the midst of spiritual, moral, and political decline, the women of Judah were characterized by their devotion to all kinds of things related to fashion and external appearance rather than to inward holiness and love for God. They were self-centered woman, searching for sexual attractiveness and thinking only of their wants, but showing no concern for the oppressed, the poor, or the tragic spiritual condition of their families and people. God threatened to bring them to shame and disgrace by making them miserable slaves of their conquerors. God still demands humility, modesty, and holiness in believing women.
A Christian woman should dress modestly and carefully, with honourable and dignified attire that allows her to go anywhere with security and profound respect. When dressing modestly and properly for the glory of God, a woman enhances her own God-given place of dignity and worth. In First Timothy two, verse nine, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.” It is the will of God that Christian women dress properly covering, rather than sensually exposing the body. Modesty involves dressing in such a way as not to draw attention to the body or to cross the boundaries of proper reserve.
The source of modesty is the outward manifestation of an inward purity. Dressing in such a way as to stimulate impure thoughts or desires in others is as wrong as the lust it provokes. Dress for God.
