In Psalms, chapter hundred and nineteen, verse six, God’s commandments refer to rules and regulations that express God’s authority and His will for His people and that He expects us to obey. Matthew five, verse nineteen, “Whosoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: But whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” The position of believers in the kingdom of heaven will be according to their attitude toward God’s commandments: by playing and teaching them. Believers’ faithfulness in this respect will determine their degree of glory in heaven.
The commandments are more than the basic ones, such as the rich young ruler in Mark ten, verses seventeen to twenty-two. Jesus said to him in verse nineteen, “Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.” However, even though the rich young ruler kept these since childhood, he still failed to keep others, as in verse twenty-one. “Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.” Jesus saw that the young ruler was trying to live right, but his wealth was holding him back.
Believers need to ask God if something is holding them back from following the Lord completely. The reaction of the rich young ruler, “And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” It’s a command, and the Lord meant for all to follow.
