Rivers of water

In Psalms, chapter one, verse three, the outcome of those who faithfully seek God and His Word is life in the Spirit. Since water often represents the Spirit of God, as in John seven, verses thirty-eight through thirty-nine, those who are instructed by God and who abide in His Word will receive an unfailing source of life from the Spirit. The phrase “whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” does not mean problems or failure will never occur, but rather that a godly person will know God’s will and favor.

Life in the Spirit is to come to know the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was there from the beginning, as in Genesis one, verse two, after God made the heaven and the earth. “And the earth was without form and void; darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” The Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit.

As mentioned earlier, the two ingredients to have the unfailing source of life from the Spirit are obedience and abiding in His Word. After all, the Holy Spirit is a third being of the Trinity. The three in one are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Therefore, rivers of water consist of interacting with the Spirit of God, which is like a person. The Holy Spirit is unique and not simply a power or influence. In John fourteen, verses fifteen through twenty-six, under the promise of the Spirit section, Jesus responds to Philip’s question from verse eight in verse nine and states in verse sixteen, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.”

The Comforter is the Holy Spirit who will be by the believer’s side to help and strengthen, to teach the course of their lives, to comfort in difficult situations, to intercede in prayer, as in Romans eight, verses twenty-six to twenty-seven, and to be a friend to further their interest, and to remain with them forever.
