In Psalms, chapter ninety, verse twelve, our days upon the earth at best is seventy to eighty years, as in verse ten of the theme chapter, and are few compared to eternity. We should pray for a sober understanding of the brevity of our lives to present to God a heart of wisdom in how we use each day He gives us, as in Psalms thirty-nine, verse four. This life should be a preparation for the next life, and we should determine what God wants to accomplish for Himself, our families, and others through our faithful service. When our time here is over, we reach heaven, and how we lived or did not live in dedication to God will be evaluated. In that light, we must pray for a heart of wisdom, a righteous fear of God, as in verse eleven, and the favor of God in our lives and our work for Him, as in verses thirteen through seventeen of this theme.
The theme verse under Eternal God and Mortal Man is about knowing how long we have to live, but it depends on how we live. Only the Lord knows the exact number of our days here on earth. Still, by His Spirit and grace, “So teach us to number our days,” will come from believers applying God’s Word to our lives to have a fruitful life for ourselves and those around us. “That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” The other part of this theme verse is when we receive the Word of God and use it to be a doer.
Many people accept salvation through Jesus Christ and, for a while, are on a spiritual high until they eventually go dry and resort back to carnal ways. Their unholy lifestyle will affect their outcome because they do not read, study, and apply the word to their lives. However, some ungodly people do manage to live longer than the average seventy to eighty years, which only God knows. Still, the majority do reach the average, while some do not. Sin causes many to fall short in many things, which includes lifespan.
When we read, study, and apply the Word of God, it will direct our path. However, unbelievers follow advice that eventually affects their lives and leads them to their path until their time ends. Think about it: where we are now is the word of those we listen to. Whether family, friends, enemies, neighbors, strangers, teachers, and others got us to the place we are now, whether for God or not. However, all will have to answer to Him when the number of our days is over.
