In Psalms, chapter thirty-nine, verses four through six, David prays that the Lord will help him realize the brief span of his life here on earth, as in verse eleven, Psalms sixty-two, verse nine, Psalms hundred and forty-four, and Job seven, verse seven. The request should be the prayerful concern of every believer. However, God has given each of us only a short time on earth as a period of testing to determine our faithfulness to God while living amid a perverse generation opposed to God and His Word. We may spend our days living for the things of this world, with little thought that our home is in heaven with God, or we may walk in this world as pilgrims, rejecting the ways of the ungodly, living by God’s standards, distracting ourselves to His ways, and witnessing to the gospel of Christ that others may be saved. May all of us soberly learn to number our days to know the brevity of life about eternity and present to God a heart and life of wisdom, as in Psalms ninety, verse twelve.
On the other hand, James four, verse fourteen, declares, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” Only what we do for God and others will endure forever. To know the brief span of life is determined by God.
What believers do here on earth for the Lord should be our main concern daily as we live for Him. Be thankful to the Lord for each day we wake up and give our best to help influence others who do not know how to serve Him. For each believer, our actions speak louder than our words.
