In Psalms, chapter fifty-seven, verse one, the shadow of God’s wings represents His love, protection, strength, and gracious presence. We take refuge under those wings in prayer and rely on Him in faith, as in Psalms seventeen, verse eight, Psalms thirty-six, verse seven, and Psalms ninety-one, verse four. In the shadow of His wings, we receive protection from everything contrary to His purpose for our lives, as in verse two.
The shadow of thy wings is a metaphor drawn from the imagery of a hen protecting her young with her wings and expressing tender protection. Jesus Christ uses this example to express His love for Israel, as in Matthew twenty-three, verse thirty-seven. All believers should pray that God will reach out to protect us in times of danger. Similar to someone who instinctively reacts to guard against harm, as in Deuteronomy thirty-two, verse ten, Proverbs seven, verse two, and Zechariah two, verse eight, and that the heavenly Father will always be ready to hide and shield us as a mother hen covers her chicks, as in Psalms ninety-one, verse four.
The theme under The Mercy and Truth of God section illustrates the believer’s confidence in God’s divine protection. As the saints of God pray in faith for dependence upon Him daily, all must remember that it is His will to be present in the lives of His people. However, the children of God should also be careful how they behave and treat others around them. Believers cannot act ungodly towards others and then holy before the Lord. Our actions and what we say can create trouble, and then we expect to be protected by God.
In the Shadow of Thy Wings is about us doing our part as saints of God, and He will do His part by protecting us because we have to live right in the sight of God.
