In Second Samuel, chapter twenty-four, verse one, this was not in consequence of the numbering of the people but that which ultimately led to that act. The chapter does not say why the anger of the Lord was burning, but doubtless, because He saw both in king and people that rising spirit of earthly pride and reliance on earthly strength which led to the sin. Concerning David’s sin in taking a census of the people states that God incited David, whereas First Chronicles twenty-one, verse one, says that Satan provoked David to number Israel.
God, at times, will use allow Satan to achieve His divine purposes by permitting him to test God’s people, as in Job one, verse twelve, chapter two, verse six, Matthew four one through eleven, First Peter four, verse nineteen, and chapter five, verse eight, respectively. God allowed Satan to tempt David because of David’s pride and lack of trust in God. David’s will was involved in the sin, as in verses three to four of chapter twenty-four of Second Samuel and First Chronicles twenty-one, verses three to four, accordingly. The mention of the “anger of the Lord was kindling against Israel” presupposes that Israel had committed a grave offense against God. God’s anger stirred only when people sin: and the people had done something to merit this punishment.
The nature of David’s sin could easily be pride expressed in his leadership of powerful and numerous people, in self-exaltation and boasting of his accomplishments and strength. David was glorying in human ability and great numbers rather than in the power and righteousness of God. Today, it is easy for a believer to fall into taking credit from the influence of others concerning personal achievements, which God has opened the door to reach accomplishments. However, all things are possible with God in our corner. The importance for believers is to acknowledge Him in everything He does to help us achieve these accomplishments.
