In Exodus chapter fourteen, verse thirty-one, the Israelites saw with their own eyes the work of God done before them with the Egyptians. The people feared and believed in God simultaneously. Through His servants Moses, the Lord established what He set out to do at the very beginning from the time in the Garden of Eden. Seeing God’s awful judgment against the Egyptian army, the people “feared the Lord,” seeing God’s miraculous deliverance, they “believed the Lord.” When we receive a true revelation of God’s majesty and His judgment against sin, we will follow Him in faith while growing in God.
The Lord did something great for the Israelites at the Red Sea as soon as they crossed over. You figure that with this experience by the Mighty God, the Israelites will ride into the sunset by serving the Lord and never looking back. Despite the tremendous display of power and authority from the Holy One above, the Israelites did resort back to their old ways. They did celebrate for a while over the triumph of the defeat of the Egyptians. However, the Israelites did not like the unfavorable conditions ahead.
Today, some people believe in God based on what they see in front of them and do not have that endurance when something unexpected occurs which was not forthcoming. The old cliche of “seeing is believing” for those who claim to be people of God. However, if we think in this manner, there will be no development spiritually, and our faith will not be firm but hallow. Life will not be a bed of roses for anyone. Whether rich or poor, no matter race, color, or class. Everyone will encounter obstacles of all sorts stemming from minor to large-scale. The fear of God is the beginning. Believing God throughout should be our living.
