In Psalms, chapter fifty-one, verse ten, all believers need God’s Spirit to create a pure heart that hates iniquity and a renewed spirit that desires to do God’s will. Only God can make us new creations and restore us to true godliness, as in John three, verse three, and Second Corinthians five, verse seventeen, respectively.
The theme title is “Create in Me a Clean Heart.” After committing ungodly acts, we must ask God to do this. The first nine verses of the theme chapter include, “Have mercy upon me,” “Wash me thoroughly,” “Against thee, thee only,” “Purge me with hyssop,” and “Hide thy face from my sins.” David did not know he was going to do this ungodly act. Therefore, it is significant that the repentant asks for heart cleansing.
“Create in me a clean heart” is needed because of what David’s eyes and ears were exposed to. The confession of the sin that he committed in Psalm fifty-one is linked with Second Samuel eleven, verse two, “And it came to pass in an evening tide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof, he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.” The eyes and ears are the windows of our hearts. This encounter was not a plan because if he knew this was the case in the first place, this situation would have never happened. Similar to many of us who encounter wrongdoing. Blessed are those who overcome the temptation and prevail against it. However, for those who do not, asking God to “Create a clean heart and renew a right spirit” is essential to avoid coming down this dark path again. Those who repeatedly commit the same sin over and over have a habitual lifestyle and need to ask God to remove the lust from this sin and all the items that affect the repetition.
