In Numbers, chapter eleven, verse twelve, Moses expected to lead a triumphant army into the promised land. Instead, the people were like spiritual babies, and Moses felt it was too much for him to carry them. The Spirit of God on Moses was now on the seventy elders to help him in spiritual leadership. Through the concern of His servant, the Lord equipped these men. Therefore, Moses knew that by the Spirit’s power on the elders, he could face the challenge of any task God called, for he did not have to bear the burdens in His strength.
God’s servant did not expect by now for the people to behave the way they did at this point. With the miracles before the eyes of the Israelites from the time of leaving Egypt and the experience of the power of God there, he thought they would have a higher level of spiritual maturity. However, diversity among the Israelites, which dwells among them, was not the case. Their expression to the servant of God in verses five and six of the same chapter is that they remember the fish, melons, cucumber, leeks, onions, and garlic back in Egypt. However, they see nothing at all besides the manna before their eyes.
The influence of the mixt multitude was evident among the Israelites because they were more focused on the physical and less on the spiritual. The people of Israel were more convinced about what they saw instead of believing based on what they experienced. The low level of spiritual maturity did not help Moses, which weighed on him to the point he could no longer bear it and confronts God about it.
Today, within the churches, there are situations where the leader or pastor has the burden to carry the congregation spiritually, which could weigh down a person in such a position physically. The believer is responsible for their spiritual growth in the Lord. To grow spiritually is to read and pray daily and to develop that relationship with God to obtain the gifts of the Spirit to aid the leaders. However, the flip side to this is that if they allow the believers to help them is another situation in itself.
