In Proverbs, chapter twenty-two, verse nine, “He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.” God blesses those who are generous. God promises that those who give generously will receive back more than they give. He blesses those who are kind and considerate, whether it be in financial giving or in giving of themselves. The New Testament teaches that we are stewards of God’s gifts and must use them for His cause and the benefit of those in need.
There are eight significant principles and promises of Christian giving in First Corinthians eight through nine. First, we belong to God, and what we have is held as a trust for our Lord. Second, we must decide in our hearts to serve God and not money. Third, we give to help those in need, to advance the kingdom of God, to store up treasures in heaven, and to learn to fear the Lord. Fourth, giving should be in proportion to our income; Fifth, giving is seen as proof of our love and should be performed sacrificially and voluntarily.
By giving to God, we sow not only in money but also in faith, time, and service, reaping greater faith and blessings, which is the sixth. Seventh, when God supplies an abundance, it is so that we may multiply our good works. Giving increases our dedication to God and activates the work of God in our financial affairs.
Believers who give what they can to help those in need will find that God’s grace provides a sufficiency for their own needs, and even more, that they abound in every good work. “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich,” as in Second Corinthians nine, verse eight.
