The blessing of Abraham is the land: “that thou mayest inherit the land……which God gave unto Abraham.” What did God give to Abraham? The land. The blessing of Abraham has been misinterpreted so many times by many people for physical means rather than spiritual.
First, how did the blessing of Abraham become the blessing of Abraham? The answer may be in the New Testament, Hebrews chapter eleven, verse eight. Abraham here did not question what or where God was leading him but went willingly. His actions pleased the Lord. Abraham did not complain or show any negative feedback. He did not know where or how the outcome would be but trusted God. How many of us can say we have done that?
Abraham’s activity spoke louder than words. Abraham gave a tenth of all his spoils. He was obedient in that regard to giving tithes and offering. Abraham, by his works, believed in God and accounted to him for righteousness: he was called the Friend of God. Have we been giving our tithes and offering obedience to God’s word? Our righteous works are being demonstrated daily to others? Have we been a friend to God?
The blessing of Abraham came into being as an example of how he lived before God. The things he did in God’s sight gained favor and received from Him. Abraham did not expect it, but he trusted God to direct his path. However, people misunderstand the blessing of Abraham for material blessings instead of spiritual. How can we expect to gain physical or material gifts by just doing our own thing and then asking God for something and not doing anything on our part to earn it?
Today, too many Christians miss the point with blessing messages, prosperity tips, and ways to receive from God. However, the problem is they spend all the time focusing on this instead of building a personal relationship with God himself. If we begin to do that and maintain it, God might surprise us with something we did not expect.
