In Psalms, chapter hundred and nineteen, verse one, God promises to pour out His blessing on those who have chosen to live by His Word with all its standards and directives. They will have His presence, as in Genesis twenty-six, verse three, bringing them strength, help, and protection, like in Ephesians three, verse sixteen, and Colossians one, verse eleven, respectively.
God’s blessing upon the lives of His followers is essential. Scripture reveals several things about God’s blessing. The word “blessing” is a divine gift that causes our work to succeed. God’s presence with us, as in Genesis twenty-six, verse three, and God giving us strength, power, and help. God sustains His work by blessing, as in Ezekiel thirty-four, verse twenty-six. The life and history of God’s people are under the operation of blessing and cursing, as in Deuteronomy eleven, verse twenty-six.
The whole work of Christ in the New Testament is by God, who has “sent Him to bless you,” as in Acts three, verse twenty-six. We see His blessing given to children, as in Mark ten, verses thirteen through sixteen, and His followers during His departure from earth. Blessing likewise plays an integral part in the ministry of the apostles, as in Romans fifteen, verse twenty-nine.
The blessing of God is conditional. God’s people must make a choice: either blessing through obedience or cursing through disobedience, as in Deuteronomy thirty, verses fifteen through eighteen, and Jeremiah seventeen, verses five and seven. How do we receive the Lord’s blessing? Three things are required: we must always look to Jesus for His blessing. We must believe in, love, and obey Him. We must remove everything from our lives that would hinder the blessing. However, God’s blessing may not be with personal material gain or the absence of suffering in our lives.
