In Psalms, chapter one hundred and forty-four, verses one through fifteen, God is an immovable rock, stronghold, shield, and deliverer for those who take refuge in Him. He trains the hand of the righteous for war and their fingers for battle in all areas of spiritual conflict.
“Which teacheth my hands to war” is the psalmist called to wage war for the nation of God’s chosen people. We can apply this message to believers in Christ, whom God calls to wage a spiritual battle against Satan, the world, and the flesh. We must advance God’s kingdom by proclaiming the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing down Satan’s strongholds, and leading people to salvation in Christ. As in Ephesians six, verses eleven to eighteen, against the willes of the devil, against principalities, powers, and rulers, using the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Warriors who depend on God’s strength and training will be victorious.
“O Lord and come down” is where God has trained the psalmist to trust Him for battle and for any time crisis. Moreover, the psalmist must continue to trust God for the battle as there are still many dangers to face. After experiencing salvation in Christ and baptism in the Holy Spirit, believers must continue in God’s daily strength and grace to face the battles of temptation and spiritual warfare encountered in following Christ. Seeking God’s face for heaven’s help is an ongoing need for all who are members of God’s kingdom, as in Matthew six, verse thirty-three, Hebrews seven, verse twenty-five, and Hebrews eleven, verse twenty-six, respectively.
Believers need to understand that this spiritual warfare is ongoing. To fight the good fight of faith is not an occasional situation for saints of God but a battle until the end.
