The “son” here referred to is Moses. His birth, escape from death, and all the events of his youth were under the direction of God so that he might deliver Israel from bondage. All believers need to know that God also works in their lives using appropriate means to accomplish His will.
The problem, however, is that Pharaoh had just announced all newborn sons must go into the Nile River. According to the law and the surrounding culture, their son was supposed to die. However, his mother saw he was “a fine child.” Rather than obey Pharaoh, his mother preserves Moses’ life. Like the midwives in Egypt, Jochebed chooses to disobey an evil decree to save her child. Hiding a newborn son for three months would have been extremely difficult for the mother and her family. Even more strenuous, she would soon have to make a tough decision regarding her son’s future, leaving his young life in God’s hands.
When Moses was three months old, he had grown to where hiding him from the Egyptians was impossible. Rather than risk her entire family being caught and punished for hiding her newborn son, the mother of Moses hatches a plot. She obeys Pharaoh’s command to “cast into the Nile” her Hebrew boy. At the same time, this ruse will give hope for her son’s survival. She makes a basket from bulrushes or papyrus reeds and coats it with pitch so it will float. This construction includes some similarities to Noah’s ark, which involves the put-up that would allow it to float on the water.
A “son” or daughter can change the direction of a family once they are born. The plan of life that parents may have for the child may result in the potential for great things. However, only God knows how things eventually will pan out in the future. The parents can only do so much for the child while they will have to face the real world out there on their own. Kids’ will encounter challenges and sometimes obstacles parents can only advise on, but the child will have to experience by themselves.
Moses perseveres throughout his life, with God at the helm directing his path. The Son of God was born and later grew and endured the challenges to give us the opportunity for eternal life. God gave His only Son, yet He let Jesus bore our sins on the cross alone. The “son” or daughter has the potential to bless the lives of others around them by the grace of God. We, as parents, must support them by depending on the Lord to direct their path.
