A foolish man spendeth it up

In Proverbs, chapter twenty-one, verse twenty, “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” Those who are wise and prudent will have the necessities of life, while the foolish spend all they have to acquire non-essential things for pleasure, as in verse seventeen. “He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.” Today, many foolishly use easy credit, which often proves to be their undoing. God is pleased with those who wisely accept a basic standard of living rather than go into debt and live beyond their means.

“The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender,” as in Proverbs twenty-two, verse seven. The foolish person who decides to use easy credit is the one who serves the lender. They make the borrower spend more than they should because they refuse to wait. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint,” as in Isaiah forty, verse thirty-one. When a person starts to panic, they can make costly decisions.

Believers should ask God for wisdom and be good stewards when making financial decisions. “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows,” as in First Timothy six, verse ten. Those who love to spend will love cash. Therefore, believers should be careful in this area. Especially the company we keep within our environment. Pleasure is not easy to resist and overcome: believers need to seek God for strength.
