In Genesis chapter twenty-seven, verse six, Rebekah and Jacob sought to fulfill God’s covenant purposes through deception and manipulation. They have lost sight of the reason for God’s blessing: to bring about a godly and just people who walked with God in faith and obedience.
Rebekah overheard Isaac’s plan to give his blessing to Esau, the firstborn. It will include the promise that the blessed son will be master over his brothers. However, the prophecy Rebekah gets from the Lord when pregnant with her twins conflicts with Isaac’s plan. God had told her clearly that the older one would serve the younger, not the other way around. Since Rebekah blatantly prefers Jacob, she immediately begins a plan to subvert her husband’s program.
Rebekah immediately calls Jacob. She will do whatever she can to ensure that Jacob receives a blessing. This action is not the first time someone in Genesis has attempted to “help” God by scheming to force His will, as they saw it. Unfortunately, this will result in hurt feelings and a split family. Rebekah suffered greatly for her deceitful scheme, for Jacob had to flee and never saw her son again.
The situation with Rebekah, being the mother of both Esau and Jacob, discovers it very hard to accept Isaac’s fixed plan. She does not realize that God’s preference will come forth eventually and not through humanistic means. However, Rebekah carries out her intentions only to cause sorrow and friction with Esau against Jacob. Her younger son has to flee to Laban to stay with her brother Haran. Although Rebekah’s purpose seems good for her son from a carnal perspective, spiritually, it was not a good idea. She ended up sending him away and never seeing her son again. Planning our way instead of God’s way will lead to disappointment.
