A righteous Branch

In Jeremiah, chapter twenty-three, verses five through six, the branch, which is the kingly line of David, was cut off when God destroyed the Davidic monarchy here in the Old Testament before Christ. God did promise, however, to raise a king from the line of David who would be a righteous Branch; this king would finally and fully do what was just and right, as in Zechariah three, verse eight. This prophecy points to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. His full execution will occur after His second coming and before His millennial reign on the earth.
He will be called “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS,” as in verse six. The believing remnant will “be found in him, not having (their) own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith,” as in Philippians three, verse nine. Christ is spoken of as a branch from David’s family. He is righteous himself, and through him all his people are made righteous. Christ shall break the power of Satan.
All the spiritual seed of believing Abraham and praying Jacob shall be protected, and shall be saved from the guilt and dominion of sin. He is here spoken of as the Lord our Righteousness. He is so our Righteousness as no creature could be. His obedience unto death is the justifying righteousness of believers, and their title of heavenly happiness. And their sanctification, as the source of all their personal obedience, is the effect of their union with Him, and of the supply of this spirit.
By this name every true believer shall call Him, and call upon Him, for we have nothing to plead but this, Christ had died, rather is risen again; and we have taken him for our Lord.
