In Jeremiah, chapter seven, verses nine to ten, “Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?” The people were committing all kinds of sins, as in verses five through nine of this theme chapter. “if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour; If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not?”
Then on the Sabbath, they came to the temple and stood before God, deluding themselves into thinking they were secure in God’s love for them. This sort of theology is evident today, when people who live in rebellion against God and His commands feel secure because they believe in “the blood of Christ.” In Jeremiah’s words, they are trusting in lying (deceptive) words that cannot profit, as in verse eight.
“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways,” as in Psalm one hundred and nineteen, as in verses one through three. Either live one way or the other way.
