In Isaiah, chapter thirty-seven, verse thirty-six, the destruction of the Assyrian army was foretold in chapters ten, verses three through thirty-four, thirty, verse thirty-one, and thirty-one, verse eight, respectively. In the first scriptures God used the Assyrians to punish His godless people. Then would punish the Assyrian for their pride and arrogance where Isaiah prophesied destruction for the Assyrians. The prophecy was fulfilled when God’s angel eliminated one hundred and eighty-five thousand troops in the Assyrian camp.
Isaiah again assured that after God judged His nation, a godly remnant would be true towards Him. Isaiah foretold the route the Assyrian invaders wold take as they sought to plunder His holy place, God Himself would take them down. The next scripture “For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod,” from Isaiah thirty, verse eight. The final scripture, “Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited,” as in Isaiah thirty-one, verse eight.
Judah’s miraculous deliverance from the Assyrians is one of the great redemptive moments in the Old Testament. The most powerful political kingdom on earth stood against the little nation of Judah. When defeat seemed inevitable, God intervened and delivered His people. In mercy God manifested His willingness to renew the covenant and to be Judah’s God and Protector if the people would place their trust in Him.
In the midst of a crisis, it might seem difficult to place trust in someone. However, for believers, those who place their trust in God will receive reassurance from Him no matter how the situation my look. God will overcome like He did to those who oppose Him.
