Until the Spirit be poured upon us

In Isaiah, chapter thirty-two, verses fifteen through twenty, Isaiah returns to the theme of the righteous reign of the king. The righteousness and blessing of the kingdom age will come about because the Spirit will be poured out from heaven upon God’s people and their descendants, as in chapter forty-four, verse three. “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.”
In the present age, the blessings of redemption come to us through the Spirit, who has been poured out upon believers. One of the primary results of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit will be the impartation and release of prophetic gifts. The manifestation of the Spirit through His gifts makes known the presence of God among His people. When God pours out His Spirit on all people groups, as in Joel two, verses twenty-eight to twenty-nine, it will be a time of great calling “on the name of the Lord” in the earth.
Yet this outpouring is only partial; we await and pray for the fullness of redemption and the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the end of history.
At Pentecost, there were three observable manifestations that the Holy Spirit was descending upon the one hundred and twenty disciples in fulfillment of Acts one, verse eight. There was a sound “as of a rushing mighty wind” as a prophetic sign that the Holy Spirit was coming in “power.” Wind is one of the Biblical symbols for the Holy Spirit. There also appeared visibly “cloven tongues like as of fire” that rested on each of the disciples as a prophetic symbol that the Holy Spirit was coming to empower them to be fiery witnesses for Jesus.
