In Isaiah, chapter nine, verse eight, through to chapter ten, verse four, begins with the opening verse, “The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.” These verses describe Israel’s arrogance and persistent impenitence, and God’s anger and judgment against them. Even in great trouble, they would not humble themselves and turn to God with a contrite and broken heart.
Impenitence in the Bible refers to a refusal to repent or acknowledge one’s sins, often leading to persistence in sinful behavior despite awareness of its consequences. Arrogance is associated with pride and a sense of superiority over others. The combination of being arrogant and impenitent in a person makes it extremely challenging for them to see the problem. They do not recognize God’s anger, which does not make their situation better either. There was no sign of remorse or sincerity from God’s chosen people for their sinful actions and way of unholy living.
The theme title, “The Lord sent a word into Jacob,” is a perfect example of how the Lord could only relay the message to him because he was living in righteousness. God does not tolerate sin. In Matthew six, verse twenty-three, “But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” In John twelve, verse thirty-five, “Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” How could someone know God’s anger towards them if they did not care to show their concern towards Him? Satan uses sin to block their hearts and minds towards God.
