In Isaiah, chapter eight, verse one, “Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Mahershalalhashbaz.” This is the name of Isaiah’s second son: The meaning thereof is “plundering, and despoiling will come quickly.” That name predicted not only Syria’s destruction and fall at the hands of Assyria, but the fall of God’s chosen nation as well. On the other hand, as in Isaiah seven, verse three, “Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.” The name of Isaiah’s firstborn means “a remnant will return.” This name highlighted God’s intention to preserve a faithful remnant of people to carry out His plan of salvation.
The names of children today are significant because they do not have a say in what they are given at birth. Parents name their babies according to ideas from things, their parents, friends, relatives, or some situation or incident stemming from good or bad experiences. However, some mothers have names ready as they bring their kids into the world, while some remain clueless as to what name they shall give their child. Parents should remember that their kids’ name will most likely be their name, the rest of their lives. Although, there are some people, as they grow older, officially, elect to get their names changed for one reason or another.
Believers who expect to be parents should pray and ask God for help because if we desire to have wonderful children who will be a blessing to us and others, we should provide names that will present them and they will become appreciative of them and thank God.
