In Ecclesiastes, chapter one, verse nine, “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” The theme verse does not mean that there are no new inventions. The pursuits, goals, and desires of humankind remain the same.
“Under the sun” refers to the planet we live on, which is Earth. The people will continue in the same fashion as they have learned from their respective families. From the time of Adam and Eve, God was present among them. However, they received the Word directly from Him, and we read what happened to them in Genesis three. Both Adam and Eve knew God, as He instructed them through Adam, as to how to live in the Garden of Eden. However, despite being in the close presence of God, they were being deceived into doing the ungodly, to disobey the guidelines provided.
Today, the same cycle continues. People live in the way they have learned from their respective families, whether right or wrong; this is what they know. However, some do receive the Word from God and are introduced to Him through the internet, radio, television, or even through family, friends, or strangers. Still, the decision remains as to whether to pursue or desire God’s direction or continue living the way we know.
Adam and Eve had sons, Cain and Abel, as in Genesis four, verses one to fifteen, which reveal the results of their living by their parents. This is not to say that those who disobey God will have the same experience, but it is dangerous if you know the right thing and decide to do wrong. Therefore, “there is no new thing under the sun,” except God.
