The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord

In Proverbs, chapter twenty-one, verse one, the verse does not mean that everything a national leader desires or does comes directly from the Lord; God is certainly not the author of evil perpetrated by rulers, as in James one, verses thirteen through fifteen. “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

Rather, God has ultimate authority over the rulers of the world and at times chooses to influence their decisions to further His redemptive purposes in history, as seen in Exodus ten, verses one through two, Ezra seven, verse twenty-one, Isaiah ten, verses five through seven, and Isaiah forty-five, verse six.

The New Testament teaches that the prayers of God’s people influence the Lord to direct the decisions of rulers by accordance with His will, as in First Timothy two, verses on through three, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.”

All leaders need prayer. Believers must pray for those who govern their country or city in which they live. Especially, if there is something the leaders have to decide on for the people that will affect their way of life. Showing no concern for the leaders in our country may influence the godly to adapt to ungodly ways of society.
