In Proverbs, chapter twenty, verse twenty-seven, “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.” The human spirit is the center of conscience and discernment, providing a window through which God’s light can bring spiritual understanding to our inner life, as in Job thirty-two, verse eight: “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” The spirit of the inner person is the life of the body. Once the spirit leaves the body, the flesh begins to deteriorate when the person passes away.
The spirit of a person either carries a soul of light or a spirit of darkness. Matthew six, verse twenty-three, states, “But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” How a person lives within will either carry a body of light, which is the symbol of the godly, or be full of darkness, which is the symbol of the ungodly. There is no in between: we either live for God or not, and the company we keep will determine that.
“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so, the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God,” as in First Corinthians two, verse eleven. If the Spirit of God is within a person, it is because they have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. They also have a personal relationship with Him through prayer and obedience to God’s Word. For believers, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God,” as in First Corinthians two, verse twelve.
