In Psalm ninety-one, verse one, the psalm expresses the security of those who trust fully in God; it assures us that God will be our refuge and that we may seek His protection in times of physical and spiritual danger. The psalm offers security for the children of God: Those who commit themselves to the will and protection of the Almighty and daily seek to dwell in God’s presence. The more fully we abide in Christ and His Word, making Him our life and our dwelling place, the fuller will be our peace and the greater our deliverance in times of danger, as in Psalms seventeen, verse eight, Matthew twenty-three, verse thirty-seven, and John fifteen, verses one through eleven, respectively.
The four names for God in this psalm describe different aspects of His protection. “Most High” shows Him to be greater than any threat we face, as in Genesis fourteen, verse nineteen. “Almighty” emphasizes His power to confront and destroy every enemy, as in Exodus six, verse three. “The Lord” assures us that His presence is always with us, and “my God” expresses the truth God has chosen to associate intimately with those who trust in Him.
The theme verse under The Security of the Godly expresses the significance of the believer dwelling in God’s presence. How do the children of God dwell in the presence of the Almighty? His Word. In John fifteen, verse seven, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” However, John one, verse one defines the value of God’s Word, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Therefore to dwell with God, a believer must abide in His Word.
