I will take heed

In Psalms, chapter thirty-nine, verses one through thirteen, the psalm continues the theme of chapter thirty-eight, for the psalmist is still under the severe chastisement of God. This psalm of David made him realize that it is the Lord who is causing the suffering, “I am consumed by the blow of thine hand,” as in verse ten. He wants to know how long he will live and how long continuing to suffer such direct punishment from God. He prays that he may not die separated from God and His mercy, as in verses twelve through thirteen.

“I will take heed to my ways” for this theme is under the In time of trouble section. The chapter illustrates significant parts a believer must be mindful of when caring for their salvation in Christ. “My tongue” in verse one, “My heart” in verse three, “Deliver me” in verse eight, and “Hear my prayer” in verse twelve. These areas will be the difference between bad and good ways before the Almighty God. Taking care of the four parts of our lives is essential.

Under normal circumstances, the ungodly are not careful with their tongue. They will carelessly express themselves in an evil fashion that reflects the heart. However, unbelievers never ask for deliverance, and neither will do any praying.

On the other side, the godly will be careful with their tongue because in James three, verse eight, “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” Like under the theme, In Times of Trouble, section believers will care to overcome the temptation of saying the wrong things. They will call upon God for deliverance, and most will pray continually. However, the ungodly will follow with whatever leads them. Broad is the way that leads to destruction, and narrow is the way that leads to heaven.
