He maketh me to lie down

In Psalms, chapter twenty-three, verse two, this is the second part of one of the most popular memorable chapters in the Bible under “The Shepherd Psalm” section: because of the presence and nearness of the shepherd, I can “lie down” in peace, free from all fear. The Holy Spirit is my Comforter, Counselor, and Helper, which communicates Christ’s shepherdly care and presence to me, as in John fourteen, verses sixteen through eighteen, and Second Timothy one, verse seven, accordingly. My confidence rests in His presence will be experienced “in green pastures,” which is Jesus and the Word of God, which are necessary for an abundant life, as in John six, verses thirty-two to thirty-five, verse sixty-three, John eight, verse thirty-one, John ten, verse nine, and John fifteen, verse seven, respectively. “He leadeth me beside the still waters” of His Holy Spirit.

In Psalms one, verse three, under The Way of the Righteous section, the outcome of those who faithfully seek God and His Word is life in the Spirit. Since water often represents the Spirit of God, as in John seven, verses thirty-eight through thirty-nine, those who are instructed by God and abide in His Word will receive an unfailing source of life from the Spirit. The phrase “whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” does not mean problems or failure will never occur, but rather that a godly person will know God’s will and favor.

The godly, which are the righteous ones, who believe and depend upon God, will continue to do what Jesus said in John seven, verses thirty-seven through thirty-eight, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” However, the ungodly, or those who reject and go their own way, do as in Jeremiah two, verse thirteen, “For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” The backsliders and the disobedient who do not take heed of the Word of God.
