My voice thou shalt hear

In Psalms, chapter five, verse three, David is firmly determined to seek God with all his heart and commits to three actions. Confident that God will hear his voice, he will persist in prayer and not live without it, as in verses one through two and Deuteronomy four, verse twenty-nine. David will pray to God “in the morning.” If we orient ourselves around God, morning prayers will be the natural thing to do. Each new morning calls for a renewed dedication of ourselves to God, as in Psalms fifty-five, verses sixteen through seventeen, chapter eighty-eight, verse thirteen, and chapter one hundred and nineteen, verse one hundred and forty-seven, fellowship with Him and feeding upon His Word, as in Psalms one hundred and nineteen, verses nine through sixteen. David will “look up” expecting the answers to his prayer, and throughout the day, he will search for signs that God is at work in his life.

A morning prayer is the section of the theme verse from chapter five concerning hearing the voice of God. How do we listen to the voice of God? Believers should hear it through His Word frequently. Sometimes, the message will come through His servants and during conversations with other people. Another spiritual way is from our heart: God’s Spirit connecting to our inner spirit. John four, verse twenty-four states, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

When a believer does this, they will be able to hear the voice of God. Not from the natural ear as some would do putting their hands to their ears: God does not deal with the flesh but the inner person. When our spirit develops through prayer, living righteously before Him, and obedience to His Word, living in purity and not living in sin, we will hear Him from within, not from without.

First, to be on the journey of hearing from God begins with Him hearing from us. All of this starts with prayer and having communication with Him. How can we hear from God if He doesn’t hear from us? It takes two to get a conversation going in the first place. Then, doing the things that please the Lord will get His attention to you. Let’s begin by doing this today.
