Ask not counsel…of the Lord

In Joshua, chapter nine, verse fourteen, Joshua and the leaders of Israel failed to pray and seek God’s will concerning the Gibeonites. They presumptuously entered into a covenant that they could not break. This ill-advised decision brought the ungodly Canaanites into Israel’s midst. In all decisions, we should seek God’s will and pray for His wisdom and guidance enabling us to avoid sorrows and tragedies.

The Israelites failed to ask God upon all such weighty occasions. They received the accusation of rashness and neglect of their duty. Though it is probable if the Israelites asked God, He would consent to the sparing of the Gibeonites. Yet, they should have gone about it with more caution and an obligation upon them to embrace the true religion. In every business of importance, we should take God along with us. By his word and prayer, consult him.

Christian affairs miscarry because they lack counsel at the mouth of the LordDid we acknowledge Him in all our ways? They would be more safe, easy, and more successful. Many times believers fail to include God in everything, no matter how big or small, important or unimportant as it may seem. They go about it their way thinking that it is harmless and nothing terrible could occur.

Today, people fall victim to financial scams, bad business decisions, and other bad deals due to a lack of knowledge and vigilance. Only after the fact they decide to turn to God when trouble comes do they realize the mistake. Yes, the situation could be fixed despite us not listening but living the process before the change happens is just unnecessary weight that did not need to occur from the beginning. No counsel means no help from God. We are not able to see what lies ahead, but He does.
